Today, with the advent of ultrasonic jets and other modernized means of transportation, traveling over thousands of miles present no hardship, however, it is still not at all easy to find a great master who has the real stuff and is willing to hand it over to anyone who comes to his door." - Zeng Weigi
Camp Undefeated: WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE MADE
The beginnings…
In 2007, the owners of a boutique Personal Training studio in Manhattan were looking to find a way to bring MMA to New York. The owners - namely Laszlo Huve and Rebecca Altermatt- realized that at the time, in New York City there were no “pure” MMA facilities. Also, with the growing popularity of UFC and MMA there were more and more people coming to their gym asking for MMA training, or cross training for Mixed Martial Arts. Most places in the city specialize in only one style of traditional Martial Arts, like Jiu-Jitsu, Tae-kwon -do or Karate. Most students have to go to one school for BJJ, go to another school for stand-up (Muay-Thai or Kickboxing), and then a gym for conditioning, paying sometimes several membership fees for these services. Laszlo and Rebecca realized there was an opportunity to create the first full service MMA facility, complete with the only full size cage in New York City, for all MMA enthusiasts. At their school, people could take classes in three disciplines for one price, with some of the best coaches in the city. So, Camp Undefeated was created. The Camp’s doors opened November 2007 with a 700 square foot matted area, full size cage and 1000 square feet weight training area. After the first year, it was apparent the Camp needed to expand. Camp Undefeated moved to 250 W 40th Street in January 2009. The new facility boasts 1700 square feet of mat space, a separate bag area, 400 square feet for the full size cage, and a 1000 square foot conditioning area, along with showers and locker rooms.
Why the name “Camp Undefeated”? The owners philosophy is that for a fighter two things are the most important…the second thing is their fight record. The owners of Camp Undefeated really believe in the saying: “No guts, no glory “ , and for a fighter the most valuable and useful tool they possess is #1 their fighting spirit,…the ability to get up and continue fighting even when they feel as if they cannot go on…with out that “Undefeated” spirit, no fighter worth anything. If a fighter loses that hunger or fire, his fighting career is over.
People are coming to Camp Undefeated with all kinds of goals – to compete, to win, to turn pro, to lose 10, 20, 50 pounds, to gain self-respect, or to just have a fun time getting and staying in shape- and the Camp mission remains the same. At Camp Undefeated coaches, trainers, students work together to ensure that everyone is reaching their potential and meeting or exceeding their individual goals.
